pieces of a wild heart

Posted by alicia on Sep 27, 2004 in Life

so our monday night group has been going through this share & tell thing. well as we have been doing this we picked up a newbie and it was her turn to share. kinda funny that she shared what i had shared in a previous week…..chapter 11 of wild of heart by john eldridge. kinda funny….but very much appreciated. if you’ve read wild at heart then you know at the beginning of each chapter mr. eldridge gives some of his favorite quotes. so i will share with you b/c i like these two so much.

Dark and cold we may be, but this
Is no winter now. The frozen misery
Of centuries breaks, cracks, begins to move,
The thunder is the thunder of the floes,
The thaw, the flood, the upstart Spring
Thank God our time is now when wrong
Comes up to face us everywhere,
Never to leave us till we take
The longest stride of soul men ever took.
- Christopher Fry

The place where God calls you is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.
- Frederick Buechner

the beginning of a busy week

Posted by alicia on Sep 27, 2004 in Life

well, my morning has been slow…2 cancellations. the only good thing about the cancellations is that i was able to take out that frustration on the treadmill and get in a good run.
as i look forward to the week i realize i have a lot of work to get done. a big school project, a case study on spinal stabilization for work, and i’m organizing the launch for a new program at the gym. though it will be a lot of work i dont feel overwhelmed….i feel challenged….i like it.

goodbye laney

Posted by alicia on Sep 23, 2004 in Life

today i found out the my family’s pet dog, laney, died last night. laney became part of our family when i was in high school. she had been previously been in an abusive household, then she came to our house where we spoiled her (this was evident by her weight). i have tons of fond memories of laney…my favorites include - painting her toenails red, seeing her dance for a piece of cheese, the way she prayed, and her ability to “clear a room”. she was such a friendly and loving dog. over the years she has made tons of friends and will be dearly missed.

(sorry if this is really sappy, but i got my shot today and that usually makes me emotional.)

the weekend and writing

Posted by alicia on Sep 20, 2004 in Life

if you read dan’s blog then you know that i did not get to go on the horizon adventures with him yesterday. i spent the weekend in training seminars. this weekend’s topic was spinal stabilization…so, if you’ve got back pain, lets talk. anyway…i dread going to these seminars mainly because they take up so much of my weekend (which is my main source of dan-time). i know that i have learned a lot over the past few months, but it doesn’t seem to balance with the amount of time & energy i’ve spent at these seminars. i hope that it will all pay off in the end.

moving on to more pleasant things…..dan & i have been talking lately about creativity. we’ve talked about all different avenues that we want to explore so that we can worship God in different ways and also to challenege ourselves. i am really interested in writing. i remember in a high school english class my teacher started each day with having us do a creative writing exercise. for example he would give us a phrase and that is what we wrote about. every thought that came to mind went on the paper. i really enjoyed those. they were a great way for me to examine things going on in my life. have any of you done writing exercises in the past? what did you do and did you like them?

heather

Posted by alicia on Sep 15, 2004 in Life

i work with this girl named heather. she is in sales at the gym. this week she approached me and asked me to help her with her nutrition because her “ass is getting too big”. so today we had our first session. it went well. i think i am going to enjoy getting to know her. even in the time we spent together today i found myself truly relating to certain thoughts, dreams, & passions she shared with me. it was really good for me. so much of what she said connected with dreams i had when i younger……things that i had forgotten…..things that i need to remember now.

here is my favorite quote from heather today…..”i am destined for great things. i am also destined to have great hair and jeans that fit.”

more poetry

Posted by alicia on Sep 8, 2004 in Life

several years ago my sister & i wrote some haikus. today when i talked to her we remembered them. they are so good that i want to share them with you.

The great band concert
Is happening this evening
I hope you can come.

Microwaveable
Chinese chicken cassarole
Is good for my bones.

Two awesome haikus
By the one brain Lane sisters
We hope you like them.

Feel free to write your own haiku on the comment page. :-)

emily dickinson

Posted by alicia on Sep 5, 2004 in Life

last night i pulled out my book of emily dickinson poetry and i want to share some of my favorites. i hope that you enjoy.

Love is anterior to life,
Posterior to death,
Initial of creation, and
The exponent of breath.

Heaven is what I cannot reach!
The apple on the tree,
Provided it do hopeless hang,
That “heaven” is, to me.
The color on the cruising cloud,
The interdicted ground
Behind the hill, the house behind -
There Paradise is found!

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

She rose to his requirement, dropped
The playthings of her life
To take the honorable work
Of woman and of wife.
If aught she missed in her new day
Of amplitude, or awe,
Or first prospective, or the gold
In using wore away,
It lay unmentioned, as the sea
Develops pearl and weed,
But only to himself is known
The fathoms they abide.

I shall know why, when time is over,
And I have ceased to wonder why;
Christ will explain each separate anguish
In the fair schoolroom of the sky.
He will tell me what Peter promised,
And I, for wonder at his woe,
I shall forget the drop of anguish
That scalds me now, that scalds me now.

Not buying a house

Posted by alicia on Sep 2, 2004 in Life

So, I guess most of you know that Dan & I have decided not to buy a house at this time. Maybe next year….maybe not. Anyway, we will be staying in Owings Mills for another year. I was ok with that idea until it took me an hour to get to work this morning. Now that school is back in session there is so much more traffic. I was amazed at the increase in volume from last week to this week. Where do all these people come from???

But anyway, now that we will be living in our apartment another year I am thinking of little projects to make our place a little more “homey”. This weekend I hope to transform an old, ugly bookcase into a beautiful, colorful bookcase. :-) If it turns out ok then I will ask Dan to help me put a picture of it on here. After the bookcase I think my next project will be curtains. Dan & I have lived in 3 different apartments and never had curtains in any of them. Just plain white blinds that match our plain white walls. But now that we are “settling down” I figure it is ok to get curtains.
