Well, I’ve been working a full-time job for almost 2 weeks! Who is proud of me?
I’m still in training, though that will end very soon. Then I’ll be in the schools interviewing first graders. Yesterday I had a bit of anxiety, realizing that I would be working with children! What did I get myself into!?!? I just keep telling myself that this is just a temp job. I can do it.
Dan & I have been reading quite a bit lately. He is cruising through The Cronicles of Narnia. I am reading things less interesting to most people. I just finished Moll Flanders by Daniel Dafoe. What a crazy story that was! I can see how this work was a valued addition to the literary world at that time. The story is set in the late 1600’s, mostly in England. The novel is written as if a woman is telling the story of her life, which is full of crime, dishonesty, and other evils that seem to accompany poverty, but then, eventually, there is restoration. I liked it very much.
Richmond news: Less than 5 weeks till we close on the house!

Last night Dan & I went over to his parent’s house for what I thought was just going to be a family cookout. But, it was surprise graduation party for me!! I was very surprised, in fact, I think I’m still in shock. It was such a good party. Some of my favorite people were there to enjoy the ice cream cake & margaritas!
Thanks to everyone who came & brought me presents!!
Also, special thanks to Donna who put it all together (you rock!).

Great news - I got a temporary job! I start training tomorrow. The job will invovle interviewing first graders to measure the success of a new program being used in Baltimore City schools. It actually sounds like a cool job to me, plus it pays more than other jobs I was looking at, and it will look great on my resume. If you remember I wanted my internship to be research related, but it wasn’t. So it’s kinda perfect that I got a temp job as a research interviewer.

I know that everyone who reads this blog wants to know how they can be praying for me (& Dan). So in lieu of responding to the hundreds of emails that you all send me daily, I have decided to write a short post about all the things that are driving us crazy at this moment.
Of course, the move to Richmond is almost here (less than 8 weeks). There are still some things that need to come together with the house. Also, I have not found a job, yet. I have applied for a couple, but really just haven’t found many jobs that interest me or that I’m qualified for. Dan’s job is stressing him out a little because they haven’t seen any interest for their services in Richmond.
As for life now, we need PEACE. We need to know how to be there for friends, but also how to take care of ourselves when we get involved. If we don’t then we have days like today when at any moment I feel like I’m going to crumble into pieces, like glass shattering, and Dan is going to explode like TNT. Also, I have yet to get a temporary job. At this point some may say that it is hopeless, but I am still looking and hoping to find something that gets me out of the apartment and lets me bring in some $$. Lastly, I’m a little stressed about things going on with my family. Money & health are constant problems for them, also, their other main problem is me trying to help them, but not knowing how. Maybe someday I will really and truly be helpful to them.
Thanks for letting me ramble and get all this out.

We got back from Ocean City last night. I’m glad we went just so we can that we visited the beach this year, but I doubt we’ll go back to Ocean City. It’s not our favorite beach scene, its too commercial, plus, the water is too cold for my liking.
Now we want to go on a camping trip, possibly to Rocky Gap, Md. We heard it is a great place for camping and for bumming around the lake. Anyone want to come with us?

I spent the better part of last week taking in the wisdom of Anne Lamott. It is only recently that I’ve even heard of Anne, but everything I read about her writing placed her on my “must read” list. So, I went to the library and picked up Bird by Bird, her book on the writing life, and Traveling Mercies on tape. I quickly read Bird by Bird, which was so wonderful for me to go through, it helped me gain more understanding about my own writing.
I devoured Traveling Mercies in a day! I loved hearing her stories, they are so real, not sugar-coated. She has a great way of telling a story about life including the pain, hurt, confusion, humor, and God. I liked it so much that I wanted more and went back to the library to get Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith which is similar to Traveling Mercies in that it is a collection of stories about life and faith. I really recommend going to the library and getting these books on tape because Anne is the narrator, its was like she was sitting in my living room telling me about her journey. I was very encouraged by her stories as I realized, once again, I am not alone.

Life
If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.
~ Emily Dickinson
This is all I can think about right now. Let this be my mantra.

When Jesus arrived, he saw this huge crowd. At the sight of them, his heart broke–like sheep with no shepherd they were. He went right to work teaching them.
When his disciples thought this had gone on long enough–it was now quite late in the day–they interrupted: “We are a long way out in the country, and it’s very late. Pronounce a benediction and send these folks off so they can get some supper.”
Jesus said, “You do it. Fix supper for them.”
They replied, “Are you serious? You want us to go spend a fortune on food for their supper?”
But he was quite serious. “How many loaves of bread do you have? Take an inventory.”
That didn’t take long. “Five,” they said, “plus two fish.”
Jesus got them all to sit down in groups of fifty or a hundred–they looked like a patchwork quilt of wildflowers spread out on the green grass! He took the five loaves and two fish, lifted his face to heaven in prayer, blessed, broke, and gave the bread to the disciples, and the disciples in turn gave it to the people. He did the same with the fish. They all ate their fill. The disciples gathered twelve baskets of leftovers. More than five thousand were at the supper.
