The World’s Best Husband

Posted by alicia on Oct 30, 2005 in Life

Today Dan took me down to the Shockoe Flea Market. I already felt pretty special just for him to take me, but then……he bought me the most beauiful broach!! What says true love more than a broach!?! So, because of this I declare Dan to be “The World’s Best Husband” and he will remain so until I hear of another husband doing something greater than this……but I’m not sure that is possible.

Rain, Rain

Posted by alicia on Oct 25, 2005 in Life

It amazes me how much power a rainy day has over me. The gloomy clouds make it impossible for me to do anything but nap.

Weekend Review

Posted by alicia on Oct 24, 2005 in Life

What a great weekend. I’m sad that it is over. Here are the highlights. On Friday Dan returned from Maryland!! Also on Friday……..I received my diploma! Yeah, now I have proof that I finished college. On Saturday Dan & I went for a walk and along the way we found some furniture that was free to a good home. So we carried a coffee table and end table about 4 blocks to our house. Now I will get to give them a much needed makeover. On Sunday we explored some of Shockoe Bottom and loved all of it! Then that afternoon we had some unexpected guests. About 2,000-3,000 thousand birds stopped by. I am not kidding you! I have never seen so many birds. I guess they were going south for the winter and stopped by our house to bath in the puddles of water on the roof of our porch and to chill in our trees. It was a pretty neat thing to see.

Now the weekend is over and it is time to get down to business. My business for the week: find a job or win the lottery (which isn’t too shabby right now).

The new people

Posted by alicia on Oct 20, 2005 in Life

We are having some problems with getting our trash picked up. Last week we thought trash day was Wednesday, so we put it out and it sat there all day. That evening we talked to a lady down the street who informed us that because of Columbus Day trash day was moved to Thursday for that week. So, we put our trash out last Thursday and it sat there all day again. After being slightly embarassed about our trash sitting out for two whole days I called the city to find out when my trash day is and I was told it would be Thursday. Well, for those of you who don’t know, today is Thursday and at 6:00 am I got up to take the trash out. Our trash is sitting on the curb all alone. Nobody else on the street has trash sitting out. Once again we look like the new people.

Update: I was sitting on the porch talking on the phone and this guy walks by pointing at our trash. He says that trash day is Thursday, but that we are suppose to put the trash in the alley behind our house, not in front of the house. So, we know for sure what day is trash day, all we have to do is find the alley behind our house.

Meeting neighbors, job hunting, & tomorrow

Posted by alicia on Oct 13, 2005 in Life

Tonite, after 30 mins of nagging, Dan & I went for a walk. Along the way we met a woman who lives about 3 blocks down from us. She was very nice and told us some very valuable information…..when trash day is. Anyway, she was very friendly and told us to stop by whenever we wanted. Then on our way home we stopped at our next door neighbor’s. Guess what…..its a girl, about my age, who likes good beer. Is she my twin seperated at birth? Probably not, she is super tall & blonde. But anyway, she was really nice and instantly invited us in for a tour of her house, which is also cool like ours. I hope that we will be good neighbors and invited her over soon.

This week I applied for 3 jobs. Two of them are working at a community rec. center in the city, and the other is working at a country club. Two completly different populations. I’d like to try the challenge of the rec. center, but it’s with the city, so that means it could take them a month before they start calling for interviews. I don’t know if I can wait a month. Everyday I add things to my “To Buy For the House” list. If the country club is interested in me they will call me next week for “an appointment”. Not an interview, but “an appointment”. I don’t know how I would like working there. One thing is for sure, I will need to get out my pearls. Every woman I saw was wearing a string of pearls. The receptionist had the biggest string I’ve ever seen. From a distance they would have looked like golf balls.

Anyway, tomorrow I am going to paint our bedroom!!! I’m a little nervous. I haven’t painted in years. I hope I remember how to do it, and what all I need to get at Lowes. I think the color we picked is a little daring, a little bold. I hope we can handle La Fonda Deep Olive Green. I will be sure to keep you posted.

Lovin’ it

Posted by alicia on Oct 11, 2005 in Life

Yesterday Dan & I spent most of the day doing things around the house. I feel like I’ve been doing nothing but unpacking, yet there is still more to do. Then we ran some errands….found the post office, staples, and target. After dinner we walked to Captain Buzzy’s Beanery for coffee & something sweet. I really love this neighborhood!! We are able to walk to so many neat places, but also, along the way we get to see some amazing houses. Today I’ hoping that we’ll walk to the park and around St. John’s Church.
