Unwelcomed guest!!
Most of you are aware of the fact that I have a very soft spot in my heart for cats. I stinkin’ love cats! If I wasn’t married I’d probably have 20+ cats (thankfully, I have Dan). When we moved to Richmond and a couple of cute kittens started hanging around the house I was so excited. Just like when I was a kid, I put out some food for the cats and a box for them to take shelter in when it’s cold. I did this a lot as a kid and never did it bring anything other than cats to our porch. But, then there was last night…..
Seriously needing a piece of cake, Dan & I were going out to Buzzy’s. As I was about to get into the car I saw something in the box. It wasn’t one of the cats I was familiar with, so I tried to get a better look. It wasn’t a cat at all! It was a possum!!! (or opossum) What the crap!!?!? Do possums live in the city? The possums in my hometown are known to have nasty tempers, so I called animal control. Apparently they did not think that having a possum on my front porch (living in my stray cat’s box) was an emergency, so they didn’t come out last night. They are suppose to come out this morning, but the possum is already gone.

Welcome to Richmond (and, apparently, the Neighborhood).
There are opossums all over the Hill. When we fed a couple outdoor cats, we had regular opossum visitors to our backyard (on 28th St). I wouldn’t try to pick them up or anything, but I wouldn’t worry too much about them either. Some of the feral cats are more dangerous.
Don’t be surprised to see the occasional raccoon either.
We’ve had some possums in our backyard. They love trash I think.
In college my roomate built a cat trap. Basically we had lots of stray cats too, but instead of taking them in, he would trap them in his cat trap, take them to walmart and let them go. One time we caught a possum. We put that in a tupperware container (with air holes) and put it on someone front porch, rang the doorbell and ran.
Ahhh college.
I really can’t believe that there are possums in the city! Maybe I should put another box on the porch. One for stray cats and one for possums.
no surprise, eral, even in the city where we are I have seen several, some of them huge
I live in the city wih Ross, cause I’m married to him. I’ve seen possums twice. One time I walked by a tree in our yard and looked up to see a huge possum staring right at me. Then another time my dog attacked what I thought was a rat. I freak out and started screaming until my dog dropped it. I went over to it and it turned out to be what I thought was a dead baby possum. Butt, as we know, possums like to play dead. I kept watching it and super-slowly it got up and walked away. One of the cooler things I’ve ever seen.
I’m glad I’m not the only person that has had a possum experience. Just so you know, if you ever have a possum problem and need someone to come to your rescue, don’t call Animal Control. If our possum comes back I’m going to call Ross so he can bring his tupperware over.
