Halloween Costume

Posted by alicia on Oct 29, 2006 in Life

Last night Dan & I went to a Halloween party. This party is the reason why I’ve been asking everyone I know for Halloween costume ideas. After hearing tons of great ideas, I decided that it could be fun to be a Greek goddess and Dan could be a Greek god. I thought it was something that we could have fun with by playing out some Greek mythology, plus the costumes could be fairly easy to make. Well, being the busy people that we are, we didn’t work on our costumes at all last week. Yesterday morning we drove around town a bit looking for a ready-made costume but had no luck. Dan then decided he didn’t want to dress up, but I was still determined to be a Greek goddess. So we went to Joanne Fabrics. I got what I thought was necessary for me to make my goddess dress and we came home. After about 2-3 hours of cutting and sewing I had a dress. Unfortunately my dress didn’t look like that of a goddess, instead, I became a Hollywood star.

Here is a closer shot of the dress:

Please help us!

Posted by alicia on Oct 24, 2006 in Life

Several weeks ago we suffered water damage to our house. At first we assumed that the water came in through the siding, but now we are not sure. We need to have a professional come take a look and tell us what needs to be done. However, we do not know who to call. If anyone out there has had a great experience with a contractor, please let me know. Thanks!

I also need help with:

- My Halloween costume

- Finding homes for all the kittens

- Cleaning the house

- Doing my laundry

- Becoming a master knitter

Exercise in Richmond

Posted by alicia on Oct 17, 2006 in Life

There is an article in the Times Dispatch about group exercise classes at local health clubs. My co-worker, Kimberly, is quoted in the article! Check it out to learn more about group exercise and your opportunity to check out the classes at Gold’s Gym.

Folk, Church, Football, Wine, Knitting, Writing, and more….

Posted by alicia on Oct 15, 2006 in Life

It’s a typical evening in our house. Dan & I are sitting on the couch watching football while playing on our laptops, snuggling with sleepy cats, and sipping wine. I love nights like this! It is still in the first half of the game, but I have decided on my next knitting project and Dan & I both signed up for National Novel Writing Month.

Tonight’s typical evening follows a not-so-typical weekend. Yesterday we went to the the National Folk Festival. The music was perfect and raw, the crafts were amazing, the folks were plentiful, and the beer was yummy. I wish that we had time to go back today because there was a band playing this evening who has a member from Giles County (where I grew up). The festival renewed my interested in learning more about the music created in the Appalachian Mountains.

Today my day started with Dan poking me and saying “Do you want to go to church today?” After much groaning I decided that if Dan wanted to visit a church then I should go with him. It could be a fun experience and an opportunity to meet people. Plus, he wanted to visit Asbury United Methodist Church on Church Hill, which has a congregation that is probably 98% black. I have never been to a black church. Also, Dan & I haven’t visited any of the churches in Church Hill for a Sunday service. So, we ate breakfast, showered, put on our Sunday best, and walked to church. There were some moments of the service that I enjoyed. I feel that everyone in the church said “Good Morning” to us and the music was good. But, there was SO much yelling. After 45 minutes of the pastor yelling her entire sermon I was so unnerved that I am certain my entire body was shaking! I don’t even remember anything that the pastor said, just that she was yelling. It took 2 cups of coffee and 3 pieces of blueberry french toast at the Hill Cafe for me to settle down. Needless to say, we will not be visiting Asbury United Methodist Church on Church Hill anytime soon. I have no idea how the congregation is able to sit through yelling week after week. The screaming cries of my nephew and neices would have been a welcomed peace to what I experienced this morning.

Now it is time to get ready for the work week ahead. This week I will be doing the work of about 4 people. Gold’s Gym at Willow Lawn has it’s Grand Opening Party on Saturday and there is a lot of work to be done to get ready. Also, my schedule is booked with training. At least I am taking off Friday afternoon and I know the party will be a blast! Anyone wanting to see where I work and have a couple of free drinks should come out to the party!

Also, props to Dan for helping me set up a new look for my blog. Every woman appreciates a makeover for Fall…

I think this weekend is going to be perfect for trying a new homemade soup.  Anyone have a recipe they’d like to share?

A Year in Richmond

Posted by alicia on Oct 8, 2006 in Life

Today marks one year of us living in Richmond. To me it does not feel like it was a year ago that we pack all of our belongings into a truck and left Maryland. I still feel like a newbie in Richmond as I occasionally get lost and rarely venture out to the Southside.

The last year has been one of those years that I will look back on as being a very defining for who I am. We have met some wonderful people who have a tremendous passion for life and others. I have been challenged by some of the people I’ve met in Richmond.  I’ve been challenged by their passion, creativity, love, acceptance, and ability to live out their dreams.  On the other end of the spectrum, we have had too many tragedies too close to home. It was a year of life. The beautiful and the ugly.  I am fortunate to have spent the last year in Richmond and look forward to the next year.
