Basic White Tees: What’s Trendy and How to Style

Basic white tees are a wardrobe essential all year round, but they are especially perfect in the spring and summertime. This week I researched what type of tees are on the market so you will be prepared for this year’s spring/summer trends.

1. Muscle Tees

This spring and summer season, fashion brands are emphasizing shoulders and shoulder details. Current shoulder trends come in the form of ruffles, shoulder pads, or muscle-tee-looking shirts which cut off at the end of your shoulder. Here are three examples of muscle tees from Frame and AllSaints that will be trendy this spring/summer. Check out other Frame clothes here. The first three shirts on the left are Frame, and the far-right is AllSaints.

Style tip: Muscle tees can sometimes come off as masculine, so if you want to add a feminine touch, adding a belt or some jewelry can soften the look.

2. Folded Cuff

Along the same line as the muscle tee concept, folded cuffs are another way designers are emphasizing shoulders this season. Shirts in order from left to right, Frame, Rag & Bone, Agolde, H:ours.

Style tip: Tee-shirts with folded cuffs look cute on their own but beware of wearing a cardigan or sweater with tight sleeves over this tee as the folded cuffs may bunch up or feel uncomfortable under a sweater.

3. Longer Than Normal Sleeves

This sleeve length is super flattering on all body types and is a perfect transition piece from spring to summer. The longer sleeves (usually end about an inch above your elbows) help keep you warm on a crisp spring day and are perfect for transitioning from long sleeves to tanks/tiny short sleeves. Shirts in order from left to right, Citizens of Humanity, Alix NYC, Frame, Amanda Uprichard.

Style tip: This type of tee, with longer sleeves, looks a little more elegant than regular tees. Pair it with a skirt or nice pants for a cute spring/summer brunch outfit.

Basic white tees are here to stay for another year! Many brands now offer sustainable options such as tees made of 100% organic cotton. Throw on a white tee and cut-off shorts for a relaxed summer outfit, or wear a white tee under a blazer or spaghetti strap dress for a different look. The possibilities are endless, and you can create many different outfits with a single white tee.
