Everything You Need to Know About New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2021

Fashion week season has officially started and first up is New York Fashion Week! This year NYFW Spring/Summer 2021 is running from September 13th through September 17th. Due to coronavirus many shows and events are live-streamed for free through nyfw.com. Designers took the approach of offering traditional catwalk style videos as well as edited ‘lookbook’ videos to show off their lines. Catwalks ranged from gardens, outdoor parks, empty industrial buildings, to hotel rooftops and studios as the models showed off the SS2021 lines during socially distant times. This post is a comprehensive review of my favorite designers shown so far.

RVNG

Designed by Jordan Stewart, this was the first year that Canadian brand RVNG was shown in NYFW. The show took place in an outdoor courtyard and featured ready-to-wear pieces in pastel colors. Lots of blazers/pantsuits made of finely-shimmering fabric and silk fabrics were shown. A trend spotted was conservatively cut skirts paired with long sleeves or blazers. The show wrapped up by displaying long evening gowns also featuring pastel colors, silks, and pieces with intricate beading. This was my favorite show on Sunday and already inspires me for spring 2021 fashion! Jordan Stewart is a female designer to keep your eye on this year.

Ulla Johnson

The Ulla Jonhson show is my favorite show of NYFW. As soon as the show started I was blown away. The location, a waterfront park in NYC, was a beautiful backdrop for the catwalk and the wind breathed life into the outfits, ruffling skirts and dresses perfectly. The opening look was amazing — crochet sweater with soft purples, lime greens, and browns paired with a ruffly floral printed skirt also featuring lime green, purple, and brown. Themes seen in the show consist of crochet knits, linen lace, and ornamental jewelry. The color pallet consisted of purples, greens, beiges, corals, and cremes. The pieces featured lots of ruffles, some pieces were completely covered in ruffles while others only had one ruffle along the hemline. Ulla Jonhson is a female designer from New York City.

Dennis Brasso

An honorable mention for Dennis Brasso’s evening wear. Flattering silhouettes in pastel colors with pleating around the neckline/bust to add detail and elevate the look. Lots of long dresses and jumpsuits in white, pastel pinks, and mints. Show took place inside a studio.

RAISAVANESSA

Another one of my top shows! The show took place on the boardwalk of a lake house and was the perfect relaxing backdrop to showcase spring/summer designs. Lots of bold colors and prints were featured. The show started with summer beach/resort wear featuring stripes and big gold jewelry (starfish/shells). Throughout the show, there were lots of ruffles — ruffled dresses, shorts with a little ruffle. Dresses that flow in the wind, fluttering ruffles, matching accessories with outfits (either matching bags, hats, sunglasses), and bright patterns make this one of my top shows.

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2021 continues today and tomorrow. To watch live shows or catch up on missed ones, check out nyfw.com. Lots of great designers are featured during fashion week, but these are my favorites from each day. Trends to watch for this spring and summer season based on NYFW include pastel colors (specifically blues, greens, corals, creams, and browns), silk and crochet linen fabrics, blazers, and RUFFLES! Stay tuned for next week’s blog post which will be a comprehensive review of London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2021. This is just the beginning of fashion week season!!

Ulla Johnston design suits me. I liked the designs in the different materials, especially against the backdrop of NY city buildings.
