The Power of Accessories — Everything You Need to Know

Accessories hold a lot of weight in the fashion world. Accessories have the power to make or break an outfit. When adding accessories to an outfit there is a fine line to keep in mind because more does not always equal better. The worst feeling is putting on too many rings or bracelets in the morning and finding yourself fidgeting with them all day, regretting wearing them. Accessories are so powerful that putting on one or two rings can add so much spice and elegance to your look.

One of my best friends, Begum, has mastered the art of wearing accessories. Begum has a way of always looking elegant while also looking like the stylish, hip girl you are dying to be friends with. She has cracked the code on what the perfect ring-to-no-ring ratio is, and how to add the right accessories to an outfit. I reunited with her a few weeks ago and was inspired by her accessories. I created this mood board on the right to try and capture her look. While I was with her she carried around tiny sunnies, a fun bucket hat, and always had on some thin gold rings and a gold necklace.

Alicia: What is your favorite accessory that you always gravitate towards when putting together an outfit?

Begum: I like to have a piece that stands out, usually funky sunglasses or some cool earrings, and then accessorize according to that item.

Accessory trends come and go, but simple staples will always be beautiful. My top three summer accessories are fun sunglasses, a cute hat, and anything gold. Sunglasses are great for hiding your identity and pushing your hair away from your face on a hot day. Having a bad hair day? Sunglasses or a hat will solve all problems. I love subtle gold jewelry in the summer because it does not make a loud statement or weigh you down, and it sparkles when the sun hits it. You can find so many cute and affordable accessories at places like Urban Outfitters. My favorite pair of sunglasses that I have had for years I got from Forever21 for $5! I recommend scoping out inexpensive accessories because you can find some true gems in unexpected places.

At my age I am down to sunglasses, watch and ring. I wonder if that is because my skin has so many wrinkles. I do not want to draw attention to them. However, I used to spend time in choosing a ring/rings bracelet or/and necklace. I liked the ‘mood board’ of Begum’s choice.
