Style How-To

The Ultimate Fashion Underdog is Leisurewear / Homewear

After the height of the pandemic, a lot of focus was placed on what to wear when you were finally able to leave the house. I fell into this category and replaced all thoughts of leisurewear with thoughts of going-out clothes. This week I am taking a step back and appreciating the ultimate fashion underdog: clothes you wear in the privacy of your home.

Winter is quickly approaching and with it comes the holiday season, flu season, and shorter/darker days. These are the times when you want to be super cozy at home, possibly wrapped up in a warm blanket. Dressing up for holiday parties is fun, but equally fun is wearing leisurewear all day while hibernating in your home. Leisurewear and homewear are extremely important during flu season because the last thing you want is to be in uncomfortable clothing while you feel like you are on your death bed. I am currently recovering from the flu and have had a lot of time to reflect on the importance of good homewear/leisurewear while cooped up in my flat. Here is what I have learned:

  1. A soft, long, fluffy robe is essential. I am talking about a robe that goes below your knees and is thick enough to keep you warm, but not too thick to feel like a heavy weight on your shoulders. A big robe is perfect for throwing on after a shower, when you wake up in the morning, or when you just want to feel like you are being hugged.
  2. Elastic waistbands are much better than tie-it-yourself waistbands. The power of elastic wasitbands cannot be understated!! I have two leisurewear bottoms; one with an elastic waistband and one with a drawstring waistband. I have found myself avoiding the drawstring pants because achieving the perfect fit is nearly impossible. I tie the wasitband to a perfect size when standing up, but then the waistband feels too tight when sitting down. When lounging on your stomach, elastic bottoms are the better choice again, because the drawstrings feel bulky and uncomfortable to lay down on top of.
  3. Layers are important. Layers are important for when you are ill because one second you could be sweating and the next you could have the chills. Layers are also important for when you are doing housework becuase you can work up a sweat hoovering then become chilly reading a book.
  4. Buttons should not exist on nightwear. This is a very controversial opinion as basically all nightwear sets have buttons going down the front, but buttons are the worst! How are you supposed to lie on your stomach with a line of mini rocks digging into you? Many clothes with buttons can be slipped on and off, but if an item of leisurewear must be unbottoned and rebuttoned to be worn, it becomes a tedious task and is the opposite of relaxing. It seems like finding a cute pair of matching pyjamas that do not have buttons or drawstrings is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Robes

These are two of my favorite robes that are currently on the market. The top chestnut/heather grey/black robes are part of a newly launched collection between UGG and Teflar. These robes are sherpa-lined and are advertised as midweight. I like how these robes are modeled with regular outfits which shows off their versatility. My other favorite robe on the market is the faux fur robe by Pottery Barn which is shown in the bottom middle picture. These iconic Pottery Barn robes have been around for many years and still catch my eye today. I like the contrasting colors of the faux fur trim and robe itself.

Skims Set

I am generally not drawn to Skims because the product colors are very neutral and bland, but the cozy collection is an exception. The soft yarn that is used to make these pieces looks very cozy and stands out from the usual cotton or velvet lounge sets. The top and bottoms look like they would be very comfortable to wear while lounging at home. Skims offers many tops and bottoms in the cozy collection that can be purchased separately to create your desired matching set. Two pros to this Skims set are that there are no buttons and no waist drawstrings!
