Trend Watch: Faux Fur-Trimmed Clothing For Winter/Spring 2021

Over the past few months, I have been seeing House of Sunny’s faux fur-trimmed cardigans pop up on social media. The first time I saw the faux fur-trimmed cardigan I immediately fell in love with it. Faux fur looks so soft and lush, but sometimes putting on a coat made entirely of fur feels too over the top. So, when I stumbled upon House of Sunny’s cardigan, which has a few pops of faux fur, it immediately looked like a fun and fresh way to wear fur. House of Sunny is a sustainable fashion brand from East London. The brand was created in 2011 by Sunny Williams and has recently become very popular. House of Sunny uses a “shop-before-we-drop” strategy where customers can pre-order pieces which allows House of Sunny to only produce what it needs. This strategy keeps the brand feeling exclusive while being able to offer customer-friendly prices. House of Sunny is selling two cardigans as part of their current collection — the Pacific Peggy (£88) and the Island Peggy (£94) sweaters. Both cardigans have detachable fur so you can wear the sweaters multiple ways (without the fur, with the fur collar and wrist bands, with only the collar, or only the wristbands).

Following the release of the original House of Sunny faux fur-trimmed cardigans, Zara created their own versions of faux fur-trimmed sweaters. Zara USA currently only has one faux fur-trimmed cardigan on its website ($49.90). Front tie closure sweaters are currently trendy; however, they are not my favorite. If you like front tie closure cardigans then the Zara faux fur-trimmed one is perfect for you. When knock-off sweaters appear on the market it raises the question of which sweater to buy. I would rather save up and buy the original House of Sunny sweater which supports a small, sustainable business. Similar fur-trimmed sweaters appearing on the market is a sign that people like the style and that Zara sees its potential to become a trend.

Faux fur-trimmed coats have been popular for many seasons now, but H&M has recently released a twist on a faux fur-trimmed coat — a faux fur-trimmed denim jacket ($59.99). Adding faux-fur details to a denim jacket adds a feminine touch to a normally masculine piece. Take away the faux fur details on this coat, and you would never question it if you saw the jacket on a male.

If you love clothes with fur on them then you need to know about Izzak Azanei. Izzak Azanei is a high-end British label founded in 2014 by two sisters, one of whom studied at The London School of Economics. I love the brand so much more after discovering this! Izzak Azanei uses faux fur and strictly ethically sourced fur which is Origin Assured and certified by Saga Furs. The collection has cardigans, dresses, co-ords, outerwear, pants, skirts, and tops. Essentially if you want any piece of clothing with fur on it, Izzak Azanei will have it, at a high price tag. Izzak Azanei has the most creative fur clothes, and my favorite standouts are the brand’s sweatpants and jumpers. Fur-trimmed sweatpants with a matching fur-trimmed sweater give the term “leisurewear set” a whole new meaning. I love the Blue Fur-Trimmed Wool and Cashmere-Blend Jumper because of the two-toned colors and exposed shoulder details.

Camo Cropped Polo Neck Cuff Sweater ($375), Black Dotted Fur Cuff Sweater ($365), Brown Button Detailed Cropped Polo Neck Sweater ($350), Blue Mink Flap Pocket Pants ($230)
V Neck Chinchilla Coloured Cuff Sweater & Pants Set ($830)

The last brand I will feature in this post is Shrimps. Shrimps is a London based fashion label launched in 2013 by Hannah Weiland. Shrimps’ style is what you would get if Chanel and The Vampire’s Wife came together to create a new fashion line. Shrimp strives to achieve true sustainability in all business areas such as manufacturing, materials used, and charitable acts.

It excites me to see clothing pieces that incorporate faux fur-trimmed details appear on the market. Most brands that feature fur-trimmed detailing are high end/luxury brands. However, seeing Zara and H&M create their own versions makes me believe that this is a trend that will continue into the new year and one which we should see many brands experiment with.

Happy New Year! XO, Alicia
