Sustainable Shoe Brands You Need To Know About This Autumn

MATISSE FOOTWEAR

Matisse strives to be a sustainable footwear company by using recycled leathers, textiles, and re-usable materials whenever they can. Matisse works to reduce its water-shed waste by staying on top of technological advances in the manufacturing process. Manufacturing plants are socially audited to ensure workers are treated fairly and paid fair wages. Many sustainable shoe brands have a slim product selection; however, Matisse offers hundreds of shoes, allowing them to provide a shoe for anyone’s style. Here are some examples of their shoes:

ABLE FOOTWEAR

ABLE’s focus on sustainability is regarding wages. ABLE provides safe manufacturing jobs for women at a livable wage. ABLE’s website states, “Fashion is one of the largest industrial employers of women worldwide, yet only an estimated 2% of fashion workers are paid a livable wage.” To break the cycle of low wages, increase transparency, and create change in the industry, ABLE publishes the lowest wages they pay their workers. TOMS FOOTWEAR

Toms is a classic brand that comes to mind when you think of sustainable shoes. Tom’s started as the original one-for-one company where you would buy one pair of their slip-on shoes and they would donate a pair of shoes to someone in need. Today, Toms’ initiative is to donate at least one-third of their net annual profits to a giving fund managed by their in-house Giving Team. Toms is a certified B-Corporation which means that they follow the “highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.” Toms has branched out from its original slip-on shoe and now offers cute boots, sneakers, heels, slippers, etc. Here are some examples of their shoes:

SEZANE FOOTWEAR

Sezane is a French brand that focuses on creating quality goods that are made to last. Sezane is an online-only company that has a lean production model allowing them to only stock materials they need and not overproduce goods. 85% of the materials used are eco-responsible and have achieved the following certifications: GOTS, Oeko-Tex, and FSC. Sezane manufactures its leather goods using vegetable tanning which uses oak, spruce bark, and other plant-derived materials as opposed to harsh chemicals that hurt the environment.
